What is the NSW Home Energy Saver loan?

The Home Energy Saver loan is part of a $557 million NSW Government program launched in June 2026 to help households lower their power bills. Rather than a cash rebate, it offers eligible households an interest-free loan to cover energy-saving upgrades such as solar and batteries.
The loan is funded by the NSW Government and delivered through approved finance partners such as Brighte. To use the Brighte Home Energy Saver loan, your upgrade must be installed by an accredited seller. When you work with Sine Wave Solar, the whole process, from quote to installation to loan, runs through one trusted local team.
Here's what the loan offers:
• Up to $15,000 in finance
• 0% interest (you only ever repay what you borrow)
• No establishment fee, no account-keeping fee, no early repayment fee
• Up to 10 years to repay, with weekly, fortnightly or monthly options
• You pay nothing up front

It's a loan, not a grant, so you do pay it back. The difference is that you repay it in small, predictable instalments as your power bill drops, often enough to cover the repayment on its own.

How much could you save?

The real appeal of this loan is what happens to your bills. Solar and a battery let you make power on your roof during the day, store it, and use it at night when grid electricity is most expensive.
Because the loan is interest-free, repayment is simply the amount you borrowed divided over the term. Here's how that looks in practice:
System cost 10-year repayment Equivalent monthly cost
$10,000 0% interest, no fees ~$83 / month
$12,000 0% interest, no fees ~$100 / month
$15,000 0% interest, no fees ~$125 / month
Repayments shown are illustrative and based on a 10-year term. Your actual amount, term and repayment frequency depend on the amount financed and Brighte's approval.

Here’s an example

A household installs a $12,000 solar and battery system with the Brighte Home Energy Saver loan and pays nothing upfront. Their loan repayment is around $100 a month. Meanwhile, their system dramatically reduces their power bill (which for many households runs between $1,800 and $2,600 a year). For many homes, the drop in electricity costs offsets much, and sometimes all, of the monthly repayment. Once the loan is paid off, the savings are yours to keep.
Every home is different, so the best way to see your real numbers is with a free assessment. We'll size a system to your actual energy use and show you your projected bill savings and repayment costs before you commit to anything.

It stacks with other incentives

The NSW Home Energy Saver loan can be combined with the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program and Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) for solar. We apply the NSW solar rebates you qualify for first, then the loan covers your remaining net cost, so you're financing the lowest possible figure.
Lower-income households may also be eligible for NSW discounts of up to $4,000 (rolling out separately). If that applies to you, apply for the discount first, then finance the balance.

Which upgrades can the loan cover?

We can help you finance a range of approved energy-saving upgrades, including:

Solar systems

Solar and battery systems

Battery storage

EV chargers

Hot water heat pumps

Reverse-cycle air conditioning

You can bundle multiple upgrades into a single loan up to the $15,000 limit. If your project costs more than that, the loan covers up to $15,000, and you cover the difference. All products must meet program requirements and be installed by an accredited installer, which is exactly what we do.

Am I eligible?

You may be eligible for the Home Energy Saver loan if:
• Your household's total taxable income is $210,000 per year or less
• The property is located in NSW
• You own the property (as an owner-occupier or a landlord)
• You're an Australian citizen or permanent resident
• The property is not social housing or used for short-stay accommodation
• You meet Brighte's credit assessment requirements

Renters aren't eligible for the loan directly, though landlords can use it to upgrade an eligible NSW investment property. Final approval is made by Brighte, and eligibility criteria and approved-upgrade requirements apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NSW Home Energy Saver loan?

It's a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000 for eligible NSW households to install approved energy-saving upgrades, including solar and batteries. The program is funded by the NSW Government and delivered through its approved finance providers. Work must be carried out by an accredited installer, and Sine Wave Solar is accredited to deliver it. You repay only what you borrow, over a term of up to 10 years.

Is it a grant or a loan?

It's a loan, not a rebate or a grant. You repay the full amount you borrow, but no interest is charged on it and there are no establishment, account-keeping, service or administration fees. The only charge is a $4.99 late payment fee if you miss a repayment, capped at $49.90 a year.

Am I eligible?

You need to own the NSW property where the upgrade is going in, either as an owner-occupier or a landlord, and have a combined taxable household income of $210,000 or less. The property can't be social or community housing, or used for short-stay accommodation. Strata properties can apply, but you'll need owners corporation approval first.

Renters aren't eligible for the loan itself. Every application is subject to the finance provider's credit assessment.

Do I have to pay anything upfront?

No. You pay nothing upfront. The finance provider pays us directly, and only after you've confirmed your installation is complete.

How much can I borrow?

Up to $15,000 per property, subject to approval. You can bundle several upgrades into a single loan. If your project costs more than $15,000, the loan covers up to that amount and you fund the difference yourself — it can't be rolled into another finance product.

Can I pay the loan off early?

Yes. You can repay early at any time with no early repayment fee. You only ever repay what you borrowed.

Can I combine it with rebates?

Yes. STCs for solar and the federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program discount come off your system price first, and the loan then covers your remaining cost. We apply everything you're entitled to before quoting the balance.

Households earning under $80,000 a year, or with an eligible concession card, may also qualify for a separate NSW Home Energy Saver discount of up to $4,000. If you want both the discount and the loan, you need to apply for the discount first.

Do I have to use a particular installer?

The loan can only be used with an accredited installer. Sine Wave Solar is accredited, so we can quote your system, install it and set up your loan application in one place.
